Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions Elizabeth Davis Photography receives from her clients.

For Weddings…

Do you travel for weddings?

Yes! Elizabeth loves to travel anywhere in the world. Just ask for a travel estimate.

Will you keep our wedding date open tentatively?

Sorry, but no. Elizabeth will only reserve your date when she receives your deposit and signed contract.

We’re not quite ready to book, but can you tell us if someone else inquires about our same wedding date?

Elizabeth receives too many inquiries to keep up with all the dates. Available dates are given to the first client to sign a contract and pay the deposit for that date.

Can we get an engagement session too?

Engagement sessions are $400 + tax, but if you book your wedding with Elizabeth Davis Photography, you get an engagement session for free. Sorry, she can’t give you a discount if you decide to decline it.

How about an album?

Yes. Elizabeth Davis Photography can make you a gorgeous custom-designed, archival-quality, album that will make your parents cry.

Can we get the discs of the photos from our wedding?

Yes. Very much yes. Elizabeth works very hard composing, lighting and editing each and every image, so naturally, she wants you to have all of them! Discs and a set of printing rights come with every wedding package, regardless of the number of hours.

Are you insured?

Yes. Elizabeth and all of her equipment is insured.

Photography is not allowed during our ceremony, but we still want pictures before and after. Can you just hang out off-the-clock during the ceremony and pick back up afterwards?

Sorry, but no. All wedding day hours, packaged or a la carte, are consecutive hours and must be purchased as part of your wedding-day coverage.

Can you come to the dinner rehearsal?

Yes, she can. Ask her about prices during your consultation.

What kind of equipment do you shoot with?

Elizabeth uses only professional-grade Nikon full-frame digital SLRs for her main and back-up cameras and lenses as well as a host of other fun gadgets from various companies.

Do you have a second-shooter?

Elizabeth comes to every wedding with an assistant. The assistant may second-shoot occasionally, but mostly he or she will be assisting with lights and gear.

But we really want two photographers.

Elizabeth has shot weddings and events of all sizes and has found that she is able to capture everything most couples want (and more) when she is contracted for at least six hours. If you have a very large guest list or if you simply want additional coverage, talk with Elizabeth during your consultation. She will be more than happy to hire a second photographer to meet your needs.

Do we have to provide a meal for you at the wedding?

Elizabeth would love it if you would provide meals for her and her assistant at your wedding, but you are not required to do so. Since she usually puts the cameras down while people are shoving chicken parmesan into their mouths, you won’t be missing important documentation during that time. For some photographers, including Elizabeth, hungry = shakey. Shakey photographer = bad. She does not need to sit at the table with your guests, but she does need to be in the same room, so when your Dad stands up to give a spontaneous toast, she won’t miss it!

Can you edit out my sister’s arm tattoos?

Elizabeth is committed to capturing the delightful and unique personality of every individual and event. With the exception of correcting minor scars or blemishes, she does not “airbrush” photos or remove key features, as she feels that every unique feature is an integral part of who a person is.

Can you photoshop out my (fill in the blank)?

Can you make our photos look vintage?

Elizabeth believes that minimal editing and post-processing ensures a timeless look to your photos, long after today’s photography trends and tastes have faded. This largely “hands-off” approach produces the clean, fresh look to photos that you have seen on her website and blog.

Do you do selective color? (Where part of the photo is in black+white and part is in color)

Please see answer to “Can you make our photos look vintage?”

Can we edit the photos after we get them?

No, Elizabeth retains the copyright and ownership over all images she takes and clients agree not to make any changes to the images once they receive them.

How long will it take to get our discs or album?

Your contract will say 4-6 weeks for the discs and 4-6 weeks after that for your album, but it’s often much quicker than that.

I love that you shoot lots of natural candids, but my mom wants some formal shots of our family. Will you do that?

Of course! Be sure to include Elizabeth as you make your wedding day schedule so there will be plenty of time to get everything done without rushing.

I printed out this shots list from a wedding website, Pinterest or a magazine. Can I give that to you?

Although Elizabeth will ask you for a specific list of family “formal” shots that you’d like to have taken during your wedding, she does not work from a shots list, as it causes her to miss the real and essential moments and stories being told throughout the day. Not to worry though, Elizabeth aims to capture all of the essential moments plus much, much more.

Do you offer discounts for Sunday weddings?

Elizabeth Davis Photography does not shoot Sunday weddings unless they occur as a part of a destination wedding. And because she works just as hard at Sunday weddings as she would at a wedding on any other day, discounts are not typically available. Discounts will really only be considered on dates when Elizabeth is extremely unlikely to book another wedding, like a Tuesday in January, for example.

I only need someone to photograph at my wedding/event for two hours. Can I just pay you for two portrait sessions back-to-back?

No. Portrait sessions and weddings or other events are two very different shooting environments. Portrait sessions are less expensive because almost every aspect of the session can be controlled or easily re-done if something goes wrong. There are fewer people, fewer distractions and fewer chances for unplanned things to happen at a portrait session. At a wedding or other event, if an essential moment is missed because a guest steps in front of Elizabeth’s camera, the moment is lost and cannot be recreated. When the risk of not getting the shot is higher, the cost increases.

Why does wedding photography cost so much?

That's a wonderful question. Elizabeth actually wrote a whole article on exactly that subject. Check it out here. (opens in a new window)

Do you accept credit card payments?

We only accept checks and cash at this time.

For Portrait Sessions…

What should we wear?

Whatever you want! Elizabeth does recommend against wearing exactly-matching outfits, which tends to make your photos look dated, staged, and frankly a bit cheesy. Match styles and levels of dressy-ness instead. [If you wouldn't go out like that in public normally, don't wear it to your portrait session!] Unless you’re going for a very specific theme, avoid clothing with large logos or words, as they tend to distract from your actual face. The most important thing is to dress comfortably, dress for the weather and be yourselves. Check out the images below to see a few past clients who did a fabulous job of coordinating their clothing.

If your session includes children, consider letting the kids choose their own clothes for part of the session. (For more help with choosing clothing for your session, check out Elizabeth Davis’ Pinterest Board, which is being constantly updated for just such an occasion.)

Can we change outfits during the session?

Of course! Each session comes with one opportunity to change clothes if you want to. There is a $100 fee for each additional clothing change after that, though.

Can we edit the photos after we get them?

No, Elizabeth retains the copyright and ownership over all images she takes and clients agree not to make any changes to the images once they receive them.

Can my dogs be in the photos?

Of course! Elizabeth loves dogs… unless they’re mean and will bite her, then she would prefer not to take pictures of them.

Can you edit out my husband’s five o’clock shadow?

Elizabeth is committed to capturing the delightful and unique personality of every individual and event. With the exception of correcting minor scars or blemishes, she does not “airbrush” photos or remove key features, as she feels that every unique feature is an integral part of who a person is.

How about an album?

Yes. Elizabeth Davis Photography can make you a gorgeous custom-designed, archival-quality album that will last long enough to be perused by your great-grandkids.

Elizabeth will tell you 4-6 weeks for the discs and 4-6 weeks after that for your album, but it’s often much quicker than that.

My kid has a two-minute attention span. How do you propose to get him to sit still while you snap away?

Elizabeth has buckets of experience working with children and since her style is focused on people being real people, the kids don’t necessarily need to be still. She has lots of ways to help kids be happy and comfortable so that she can work on documenting each unique little personality just the way they are.

Do you accept credit card payments?

We only accept checks and cash at this time.

Do you travel for portrait sessions?

Sorry, but no. At this time, Elizabeth Davis does not travel for portrait sessions. If she happens to be in your town for a wedding, however, she is more than happy to schedule a session during the time that she is in town.
